The IELTS writing section is one part of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam from the British Council. The exam is made up of four sections:
For more information see the following link about IELTS in general.
This part and section of the Excellent Proofreading and Writing site will focus on the writing section. This is divided into two different parts (but you only take one):
The format of both parts is the same: in that there is one short writing task and one longer writing task to complete in an hour. For the shorter task you need to write a minimum of 150 words and for the longer one a minimum of 250 words.
Both of the word limits are quite short and the time limit isn’t very long to plan and write two separate tasks, so it’s important to practice your writing before you get to the test centre. This means that your writing needs to be very concise and you need to learn how to make every sentence and word count.
The best way to prepare for any writing task is with
practice and preparation. You’ll need to make sure your IELTS vocabulary is
suitable, but after that what you really need to do is practice writing answers
to the sort of questions you’ll get in the writing task.
This means timing yourself to make sure you can complete the task in time and then getting each task marked to find out where you can improve. There are two important parts to get right. The first is to write an answer that’ll get you the maximum mark while the second is to do that within the time limit.
There are special techniques and formats needed to answer each type of writing assignment that you might be set, such as the IELTS essay, IELTS report or IELTS letter.
For further help see the writing preparation page for IELTS as well as the section that has writing samples.
Excellent Proofreading and Writing can also help by offering access to a team of experiences ESL teachers who can be your personal writing tutor for the IELTS exam as well as offering an IELTS correction service.
Your writing can only get so much better without help. You can practice and get more confident at answering in the given time, but you can’t find your own mistakes and work out how to get better.
For this you need an experienced IELTS writing tutor.
The team at Excellent Proofreading and Writing can help with this. We offer a correction service where we’ll highlight your mistakes, show corrections, give an estimated writing band score and suggest how to improve your performance in the writing test. See the page about submitting your documents to the Excellent Proofreading and Writing IELTS writing correction service.
If you’ve got any questions please come to the Excellent Proofreading and Writing Facebook page where I’ll be happy to answer them and offer help. Alternatively you can use the contact me form if you’d like.
